How to – Reduce the cost of Galvanizing
At Highland, we always want to provide the best coating finish possible and clean steel surfaces are an essential requirement for good hot dip galvanizing. Contamination in the form of paint marking, grease, tar, sticky labels and weld slag cannot be removed by chemical cleaning.
The photos shown illustrate typical paint markings on material which have to be either ground off manually or wiped down with strong paint removers to eliminate the paint prior to acid pickling. This is extremely time consuming but failure to remove this paint can result in un-coated areas after processing that will fail the BS 1461 standard. These items will then require re-galvanizing at extra cost. This will also delay the turnaround on your order.
However, this charge can be prevented if the paint is removed before the material comes to us or by guaranteeing the use of water based markers. These water based markers are readily available and two that we recommend can be found at the following websites
